Fayetteville Westover arrived late to Havelock for Monday’s first-round girls basketball playoff game – in more ways than one.
The Wolverines ran into traffic delays caused by a crash, arriving about 10 minutes before the scheduled tip-off, and then managed just two points in the first quarter in a 69-39 loss to the Rams at Havelock High.
“I was extremely pleased with our defense, especially because we knew we had to start strong,” Havelock coach Anna Spear said.
The 13th-seeded Rams (15-9) jumped out to an 18-2 lead in the first quarter. Ieisha Cooper scored Havelock’s first five points, Jalisa Wilson added five more, and Natalie Johnson and Shaolin McKinley added four each in the first quarter.
Havelock continued the onslaught in the second quarter, taking a 32-11 halftime lead.
“We shot the ball better than we’ve shot the ball all year, particularly in the first half,” Spear said.
Wilson scored 15 of her game-high 23 points in the first half.
“We had her off the court for a while, and she’s just now getting back to being basketball savvy right now,” Spear said. “And, I thought Ieisha and Natalie played good, strong defense together. We didn’t even need to press tonight.”
McKinley hit a pair of 3-pointers early in the third quarter, the second of which put Havelock in front 45-16. She finished with 14 points, as did Johnson.
The 20th-seeded Wolverines (10-16) got 16 points from Kylah Saylon and 11 from Nekyia Baptiste but could never catch up after the slow start.
“We’re very pleased to keep dancing,” Spear said.
Havelock is scheduled to travel to No. 4 seed Union Pines (22-4), which defeated Southern Durham 64-47 in the first round, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Cameron.
