FAYETTEVILLE - Two nights after a dramatic buzzer-beating victory over Rocky Mount, the sixth-seeded Havelock Rams traveled to take on the No. 3 seed Terry Sanford Bulldogs Friday.
A tight game ended with the Rams prevailing 59-53 to reach the eastern regional semifinals.
“It feels great. We haven’t been this far since 1991 and we sure had to fight to get here,” Havelock coach Bill Fryczynski said. “After the win over Rocky Mount, I thought ‘ok, we are in this to win it now.’”
Kyran Bowman battled through foul trouble to lead Havelock with 20 points, while brother Micheal added 17.
“(Terry Sanford) was tough, a great defensive team and very athletic,” Fryczysnki said. “I thought Shondel (Granison) did a nice job on the boards and the twins (Jordan and Julian Cuthbertson) played some great defense and really handled the ball nicely for us.”
Havelock (19-6) moves on to Fayetteville to face off with Wilson Hunt (23-3), the No. 2 seed out of the East bracket. Hunt defeated Westover 59-43 to advance to the regional semifinal.
That game will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville.
