East Carolina Head Football Coach Ruffin McNeill announced Thursday that junior wide receiver Danny Webster has been dismissed from the Pirate program after a recent arrest that followed prior team rule violations.
“Because of the history involved with Danny, we really do not have any other option than to dismiss him from the team,” McNeill said in a statement. “Our top priority is to remain consistent with values that define the foundation of our program and with that comes a level of accountability.”
Webster, from Havelock, was charged Feb. 8 with driving while impaired in Greenville after a police officer observed a vehicle swerving in the road on East 10th Street near the East Carolina campus.
Webster, who missed the season opener against Appalachian State in 2012 and the final eight games of the 2013 season because of suspensions for separate team rule violations, finished his ECU career with 95 catches for 894 yards and 11 touchdowns in 28 games dating back to 2011.
He played quarterback at Havelock High, leading the Rams to the eastern regional championship game as a junior in 2009 but played just one game his senior year in 2010 before leaving the team. He graduated high school early to enroll at ECU in the spring of 2011.
