The Havelock soccer team scored two goals in the first 20 minutes against West Craven Tuesday night. But just as quickly, the lead – and eventually the match – was lost.

Eliazar Ortega scored three goals in the final 13 minutes of the first half as West Craven downed the Rams 4-3 at Havelock High.

Goals by Noah Kemble and Peter Brown put Havelock in front 2-0.

At the 13:09 mark of the first half, Ortega ignited a fire in the Eagles’ offense with the first goal for the visitors. He followed with goals at the 7:51 and 5:21 marks. All three of which were assisted by Lamberto Gomez.

With 1:38 remaining in the half, Gomez found the back of the net, giving West Craven (6-5-1, 4-3) a 4-2 lead at intermission.

“I just had a lot of confidence in me tonight,” Ortega said. “My teammates believed in me and I kept taking good shots and pushing hard, and we never gave up.”

Brown added his second goal late in the second half to cut the deficit to one goal, but the Rams couldn’t cap the comeback.
