“I’m going to hit the gym hard like I always do and try to get it next year.”

Davis lost to West Iredell’s Payton Shuford 6-4 in the finals. Before that, he beat East Henderson’s Aaron Ownesby (8-1), Northeast Guilford’s Patrick Brown (3-2) and Fred T. Foard’s Ben Pitts (7-4).

“I guess there were a lot of jitters,” Davis said. “It was my first time in the finals, so I was slow into the match. Once I got into it, I was doing really well, but I just came up short.”

Junior John Ellis, at 152 pounds, won one match of three, while freshman Tanner Stamper-Smith, who placed second in the regionals, lost both of his matches.

“Tanner, just making it to states as a freshman, is quite an accomplishment,” Whitford said. “This is a kid that wasn’t even in our starting lineup a couple months ago.

“To work his way in says a lot. If he can make the same strides, and we get him in our offseason program, he could be back.”
