Havelock junior Ryan Davis showed that his freshman year was no fluke.

He placed sixth at the 2011 state wrestling tournament, and then failed to qualify the following year.

Davis rebounded with a second-place result in the 132-pound weight class at the 3A state championships Saturday in Greensboro.

“He’s had a great year,” Havelock coach Pat Whitford said. “After his freshman year, people started taking a little bit of notice, then after last, somebody said maybe that freshman year was a fluke.

“People definitely know who he is now.”

Davis went 55-5 on the season, won Coastal 3A Conference and eastern 3A regional championships, then took runner-up at Saturday’s state tournament.

“I can’t help but be disappointed for not winning, but I can see a bright side out of it — I’ve been working hard,” Davis said. “I feel like I deserve it, but I got second.
