“We just had to keep the clock running and stay in bounds,” Woods said. “Overall, we did a good job with that.”

The game marked the first meeting between the two teams in the new Coastal 3A Conference.

“This was our measuring stick, playing the defending champions, and you want to know where you’re at, and I feel like we had a good showing,” Snider said. “I feel like maybe we earned a little bit of respect, that we’re doing the right things and heading in the right direction.

“Considering we’re moving up to 3A and almost played toe-to-toe with the state champions, I feel like we’re on our way up.”

The top-ranked Rams totaled 428 yards, including 268 yards on the ground, but Bryant said Richlands proved a good test.

“We’ve got a long way to go,” Bryant said. “Richlands had a good game plan and played us really well. We’ve got some stuff we’ve got to fix on both sides of the ball. That’s why we play the game, to get better, and we’ll get better next week.”

Havelock is scheduled to host Jacksonville at 7 p.m. on Friday.
