Track teams find success at regionals
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The Havelock High boys and girls track teams won two regional titles and set two school records at the eastern 3A regionals Saturday at Nash Central High School.
Steven Rookwood placed first in the high jump, cleaing 6 feet, 4 inches, while the boys 3,200-meter relay team of Anthony Holman, Anthony Argento, Chris Menjares and Justin Russell placed first in a time of 8:20.00.
The top four finishers in each event at the regional meet qualified for Friday's 3A state championships in North Carolina A&T in Greensboro.
Also for the boys team, Taylor Varden placed third in the 300 hurdles in a time of 41.6 seconds, and Russell, Holman, Michael Jolly and William Griffith placed fourth in the 1,600 relay to reach the state meet.
Menjares placed sixth in the 1,600 to earn the Rams points toward the team results.
The Havelock boys placed seventh as a team at the regional meet.
As for the girls team, Shá Jackson set a school record of 1:00.00 in placing second in the 400, while Laura Nelson bested her own school mark in the 3,200 by placing third in a time of 12:12.00. Nelson also finished third in the 1,600.
Melissa Thomas placed third in both the 100 and 200 dashes to round out individual state qualifiers for the girls.
In the relays, the 1,600 team of Brianna Harris, Tiondra Miller, Jackson and Thomas finished second in a time of 4:08.00, while the 800 team of Thomas, Harris, Jackson and Marissa McCaffity also finished second.
The 3,200 team of Nelson, Miller, Erica Earley and Alexandria Robinson finished fourth in a time of 10:19.00.
The Havelock girls placed third as a team at the regional meet.
