Rams fall in first round of playoffs
The Havelock boys and girls basketball teams both lost in the first round of the state playoffs Monday night. The 11th-seeded girls lost to No. 6 Northern Nash 58-51, while the 10th-seeded Havelock boys fell to No. 7 Nash Central 72-45. In the girls game, Havelock (17-9) fell behind 18-2 in the first quarter and trailed 32-18 at halftime. The Rams rallied in the third quarter to lead 40-39 and took a 47-43 lead with 5:44 left on a steal and basket by Natalie Johnson. But the Knights (20-3) responded with a 13-0 run to put the game away. In the boys game, Havelock (13-11) simply couldn’t find its range as Nash Central (15-6) cruised to the victory. The Rams fell behind 23-12 in the first quarter and managed just nine points in the second, trailing 38-21 at halftime. The Rocky Mount Telegram contributed to this report.
