Havelock’s Derrell Scott, left, and Concord’s Rocky Reid meet after last year’s state championship game. The two have faced off in the last two state championship games, and Reid, entering his senior season, announced earlier this month his intention to play football at the University of Tennessee with Scott.

It won’t be for another year, and it’s not even official, but Havelock High running back Derrell Scott just may see a very familiar face in the backfield with him at the University of Tennessee.

Concord’s Rocky Reid, a running back who has played against Havelock in the past two 3A state championship games, announced earlier this month his intention to sign with the Volunteers.

Reid still has his senior season ahead of him at Concord, which will most likely be among the favorites to reach the state title game for a third straight season.

Scott signed with Tennessee in February, and after graduating from Havelock High on June 7, will be heading to the Knoxville campus to begin preparations for his freshman season with the Volunteers.

Scott was pleased to hear of Reid’s commitment to Tennessee and welcomed the opportunity to have a chance to play in the same backfield with him.

“It’s cool with me, I mean, I look forward to playing with him in college,” Scott said. “I think we can give the defenses a different look and change things up a bit.

“We didn’t talk to each other very much after we beat them my junior year, but last year I just told him to keep his head up and we stayed friendly and talking some after that game.”
