Down East falls 3-1 to Lynchburg
The Down East Wood Ducks couldn't muster any other offense than a first-inning run as they suffered a 3-1 loss to thee Lynchburg Hillcats in a game Wednesday that saw them strike out 15 times.
Anderson Tejeda had the Woodies’ lone RBI while Chuck Leblanc and Ricky Valencia registered multi-hit games for Down East (11-23, 46-58), which saw its two-game winning streak end.
The Hillcats improved to 18-15, 47-53.
Things got going in the first inning with a one-out double by Leblanc to spark the offense. Tejeda followed with an opposite-field single to put the Woodies out to a 1-0 lead. While the Woodies went down 1-2-3 only twice in the game, they left eight runners on base.
Down East starter Joe Palumbo completed five innings for the second time in three starts with Down East this season. He only allowed 2 earned runs but took the loss. The Hillcats tied things in the third on an unearned run from a Leblanc throwing error.
Lynchburg’s home run leader, Jodd Carter, upped his total with a two-run homer to left in the fourth. His tenth of the year put the Hillcats in front 3-1.
Zach Pleasac turned in a career effort with 10 strikeouts over seven innings of work. He gave way to the bullpen in the eighth where James Karinchak notched his team-leading 12th save in the ninth.
The Woodies’ best chance for runs came in the eighth by loading the bases with two outs for Andretty Cordero. He would strike out to end the inning, dropping the DEWDs’ team average with the bases loaded to just .109 this season.
Game three of the series is a rubber match for the Hillcats final game in Kinston this season. The Woodies will become the K-Tribe once again for Throwback Thursday presented by Budweiser. Right-hander Emerson Martinez will take the mound against Lynchburg southpaw Sam Hentges at 7:00 p.m. from Grainger Stadium.
