HAVELOCK - Coming into Saturday's Coastal 3A Conference wrestling championships on their home mats, the Havelock Rams were fired up.
Fired up because they had just lost Thursday night to West Carteret in a dual.
Havelock wrestled like it as well, by having three individual conference champions, two runner-ups and five third-place finishers.
Those performances led the Rams to take the team title with 176 points. The Patriots finished a close second with 173.5.
"The bonus points were huge today for us," Havelock head coach Chase Holleman said.
"All the pins and major decisions we had, especially in the semifinals, that's what pushed us ahead."
Holleman said he would have rather beaten the Patriots back on Thursday to him personally but he'll certainly take Saturday's results.
Krystian Kinsey at 170 pounds took home Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament as he, Jashaun Boone (160) and Lenny Rosario (182) all won their weight classes.
Brooke Hermel (106) and Nate Grissom (113) had second place finishes for the Rams.
Onslow County conference members Swansboro and Jacksonville finished third and fourth respectively.
The Pirates had 114.5 points while the Cardinals put up 102.
Northside-Jacksonville came in fifth with 91 points and White Oak was sixth with 76.
Individual champions for Swansboro were Jakob Burkett (132), River Carroll (145), Joseph Spencer (195) and Patrick Peterson (220).
Tony Locke (138) and Kyle Linger (120) were champions for Northside-Jacksonville while Jason Padilla and Khyrie Roberts won titles for Jacksonville.
"I thought the day went really well for us," Swansboro head coach Brandon Spiece said.
"We lost a lot of seniors off last year's team and to have four guys win their classes, that's big and I'm proud of all of them."
Eventhough Northside-Jacksonville had just two champions, head coach Dave Pelsang was pleased with the day as well.
"Yeah it was good, happy for Kyle Linger as he got his first tournament win of his career and then Tony (Locke) was able to win his class too," Pelsang said.
"Chase (Holleman) did a great job running this tournament and hosting it and he's a quality coach, quality guy. There are no slouches in this conference so we always know now since moving back up to 3A that it's going to be tough. Of course moving from a tough 2A conference with Croatan and Dixon prepared us well for it."
Many of these wrestlers will compete against each other again at the 3A Regionals at West Brunswick Feb. 9th and 10th.
