The two star guards for Havelock's girls' basketball team, juniors NyAsia Blango and Aniylah Bryant, traded hot bookend quarters Wednesday versus New Bern in the Craven County Holiday Classic.

Blango started the game on fire, scoring 11 points in the first quarter (three 3-pointers) as Havelock led 41-28 at the break.

Bryant's shooting hand got warmed up in the fourth quarter as she poured in 14 in the frame to close out the Bears 72-53.

New Bern tried to put together runs but turnovers and opportune shots by the Rams crushed those runs.

"It was a game of runs for us tonight. They are an athletic team that can come at you in spurts," Havelock coach Anna Spear said.

"Our bench did a good job tonight and Alanna Williams played really well."

Williams scored eight points and stayed out of foul trouble battling inside.

Star Bell-Freeman led the Bears with 18 points and guard Diondria Courman chipped in 13.

Starting guard Laniah Jones did not play for the Bears.

Havelock forced 22 New Bern turnovers while committing just 15 and outrebounded the Bears 29-26.

"They had their tandem (Bryant and Blango) going for them tonight and then we made some bad turnovers," New Bern coach Joe Davis said.

"I do think several of our girls played a good game with Laniah (Jones) out. When you play Havelock, you have to be really good on defense and in transition."

New Bern (3-8) will take on Jones Senior Thursday in the consolation game while 6-0 Havelock will take on West Craven in the championship game.
