George Whitfield was rather to the point when asked about his annual free baseball clinic.
“All they have to do is let me know they are coming and then show up,” the longtime baseball coach and Kinston native said.
The 81-year-old Whitfield is certainly exciting to be offering free baseball lessons to players who range in levels “anywhere from little league to high school,” for another year.
The 46th annual George Whitfield Baseball Clinic will be held Jan. 13 at Wayne Community College and is open for players from across the state.
This is the first year at WCC after several years at Goldsboro High.
The cost is free, and the camp will include a free lunch for players. Parents who transport their children to the clinic will have to $8 for their lunches.
Registration will go from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Lunch will be from 12:25 p.m. to 1:35 p.m. The clinic is scheduled to end around 5:45 p.m.
Among the coaches providing instruction are: Catawba College coach Jim Gantt, New York Yankees scout Billy Godwin, Belmont-Abbey College coach Chris Anderson, former big league manager Dave Bristol, Methodist University coach Tom Austin and Brunswick Community College coach Robbie Allen.
“We have done this for 46 years and in the early years, we charged,” Whitfield said. “But we’ve gotten enough people to support us that we can do it for nothing. We have a lot of wonderful people who have supported us. They deserve credit.”
Whitfield said the goal of the clinch is to teach the fundamentals.
“We go over the fundamentals they need to become better players,” he said. “Things like how to hold the ball when you throw a curve ball or a slider. We demonstrate those types of things.”
“We will start with a welcome and with some kickoff speakers,” he said.
Arizona Diamondbacks bench coach Jerry Narron and retired Army Major General Al Aycock will be the guest speakers.
“I get a lot of satisfaction of the fact the players come and want to learn,” Whitfield said. “It’s so important they learn the game the right way.”
