VANCEBORO - The West Craven Eagles girls' basketball team frustrated the Havelock Rams early on in Friday's county rivalry game.
Havelock led just 21-8 and had committed seven turnovers against the Eagle defense.
The Rams used big scoring margins in the second and third quarters to ride away with a 74-41 victory.
Aniylah Bryant led the Rams with 19 points, NyAsia Blango added 14 and Alexandria Brown chipped in 12.
"We're getting into early foul trouble and committing turnovers and we can't do that," Havelock coach Anna Spear said.
"We made some poor decisions with shot selection and we let their physicality take away from our composure."
For West Craven coach Lea Wedesky, still seeking her team's first win of the season, she has to take away "moral victories," but it doesn't mean she wants to.
"These girls are playing hard, they deserve an actual victory," Wedesky said.
"I called a timeout and told them do not let it get to a running clock (down by 40 points) in the fourth quarter and they didn't."
Deslyn Abrams led the Eagles with 16 points and Dottie Dixon scored 12.
Spear knows what Wedesky is going through trying to rebuild a program as she had a tough go when she first came to Havelock.
"She's (Wedesky) doing a great job here at West Craven, you have to build and build," Spear said.
"They are getting better with the fundamentals, better athleticism and fundamentals are something we have to get better at too from tonight."
Havelock stays unbeaten at 5-0 on the year and West Craven drops to 0-8.
The Rams are off until the Craven County Christmas Tournament, Dec. 27-28, while West Craven is at South Lenoir Tuesday night.
