HAVELOCK - With just the first play of the game Wednesday between New Bern and Havelock, spectators could have gotten a good idea of the course the game would take.
New Bern leadoff hitter Jaren Vizcarrondo hit a fly ball to left-center field that confused Havelock outfielders Travis Kosner and Zion Beach, eventually tipping off Kosner's glove, allowing Vizcarrondo to end up at second base.
That error spiraled into seven runs scored by the Bears in the first inning and finalized in a 13-0 blowout win by New Bern.
"It definitely was a picture of how the game went, it was ugly," Havelock coach Matt James said.
"We don't secure that fly ball and we just can't afford to give any team any amount of help because we struggle to score runs."
New Bern pitcher Zach Long kept the Rams to just one hit over five innings, a first-inning single by Alex Verduzco.
Sam Callaway started and took the loss on the mound for Havelock.
Meanwhile, the Bears marched to a hit parade totaling 11 on the night, including a first-inning three-run home run from Davis Balentine.
The game marked the third-straight that New Bern scored five runs or more after going the previous four scoring just one total.
The astounding reversal of results at the plate is credited to simplicity, according to New Bern coach Mike Ellsworth.
"We've preached 'keep it simple' for a while now and I think in the game against JH Rose (a 6-0 loss for New Bern), our guys saw some of what it takes to be a good offensive team. It was an eye-opener for them I think and they saw something they could and needed to replicate."
In addition to Balentine's blast over the right field wall, Zach Long, Jacob Long and Vizcarrondo each drove in two runs apiece.
Alex Hinson had a triple and an RBI and Jamie Winfield and Brad Barlow produced a run each.
The win moves the Bears' record to 8-6 on the season and drops the Rams to 4-13.
"It's kind of been the way of our season unfortunately and I'll own that," James said.
"They've (New Bern) been spanking us for a few years now so it's hard for me to call it a rivalry until we start winning some."
