Havelock drops league games to West Craven, Richlands
The sixth inning proved pivotal as the Havelock High baseball team dropped a pair of Coastal 3A Conference games.
At West Craven Tuesday night, the Eagles scored six runs in the sixth to beat Havelock 9-3. Last week against Richlands, the Wildcats used a four-run sixth to rally from behind and beat the Rams 5-4.
Against West Craven, Havelock took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Eagles scored two runs to tie it and then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to get the victory.
Alex Verduzco went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Rams (3-11, 2-5), while Travis Kosner also went 2-for-3. Grant Callaway was 1-for-1 with an RBI, and Junior Renwick drove in Havelock’s other run with a double. Tanner Murray, Porter Church and Rayce Harrelson collected Havelock’s other hits in the game.
The Rams made four errors defensively. Renwick took the loss on the mound.
Brandon Bradley was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs to lead West Craven, and Gavin Hill pitched a complete game, striking out five, to get the victory on the mound.
Against Richlands, Havelock had opened a 4-1 lead before the Wildcats rallied in the sixth for four runs and held the Rams at bay for the next two innings.
Dylan Miller went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Rams, while Kosner was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Renwick was 2-for-4. Verduzco, Church and Harrelson had Havelock’s other hits.
Renwick started on the mound and limited the Wildcats to two hits while striking out seven in four innings. Kosner relieved and took the loss on the mound despite not allowing an earned run. He struck out one and allowed four hits in three innings.
The Rams are next scheduled to play at White Oak on Friday before hosting D.H. Conley on Tuesday.
