HAVELOCK | Senior pitcher Megan Brogden was ready for Havelock's Coastal 3A Conference showdown with Richlands Thursday afternoon - and her performance on the mound showed it.
Brogden struck out 11 and allowed just four hits and no runs as Havelock defeated the conference-leading Wildcats 4-0.
"It was just me pitching with a lot of confidence and focusing on what I've worked on," Brogden said.
"We feel like we've gotten better as a team recently, we struggled with errors at times this year."
While Brogden was dealing on the mound, so was Richlands' pitcher Leanna Whaley.
Whaley kept the Rams off the scoreboard until the bottom of the third inning when Jada Randles scored on Cassidy Baker's RBI single.
Alexis Washenko came home that same inning on an error, giving Havelock a 2-0 lead.
That single by Baker was the Rams' lone hit of the night.
However, that turned out to be all Brogden needed as the Rams scratched two more across due to Richlands' errors in the bottom of the fifth.
"We rely on Megan to play well a lot and she did tonight," Havelock coach Anna Spear said.
"She didn't serve anything up to them tonight, everything that missed was a good miss."
Whaley had the Wildcats' loudest hit in the top of the seventh with a deep double to right-center field.
Brogden quickly calmed herself and got the next three hitters in order with a ground out and a pair of strikeouts.
"This win is real big for us," Spear said.
"We split with Swansboro already and now just a game behind Richlands, it could mean a lot in a tie-breaker situation."
