There wasn't much action early in Wednesday's girls' soccer match between Havelock and Jacksonville - and that was just fine with Rams' coach Amy McCutcheon.

After all, just a few weeks ago, the Rams fell to the Cardinals 6-1.

Wednesday's match would end up much tighter with Jacksonville getting the lone goal of the match at the 50' mark by Madison Hoopes.

"We've had to switch things up so much with girls getting hurt and then I throw them into a different position," McCutcheon said.

"Our defense was really good tonight and I'm proud of them for their resiliency."

After giving up six goals at Jacksonville, the Rams looked like a different team.

Still though, Havelock struggled to find shots at the goal.

"We have to be able to move up the field after playing that good defense," McCutcheon said.

"All the teams in our conference are so solid that you can't get your heads down about a loss so I preach that to the girls. Tonight was the best our defense has played all year."

Jacksonville improves to 5-3-1 with the win.

"We always struggle more with Havelock up here than at our place and we did again," Jacksonville coach Dave Miller said.

"(Havelock) played some great defense on us tonight, had a good plan and made it difficult for us."

The Rams fall to 3-8 on the season.

Havelock hosts Richlands Thursday while Jacksonville is at West Craven Thursday.
