It was not as easy time for the New Bern boys’ lacrosse team Friday night against rival Havelock, but the Bears used a late surge to come away with a 14-4 victory.
New Bern led 4-0 at halftime in a defensive struggle.
Then, as the second half began, both teams’ offenses came to life.
Havelock cut the Bears’ lead to 6-3 in the third quarter before New Bern scored five unanswered goals to stretch the lead to 11-3.
From there, the Bears were able to ice away the win.
“I was impressed with the will of our kids, they were excited to play which in a county rivalry, you expect that,” New Bern coach Steve Hopkinson said.
“There was a lot on the line and I think the kids were pressing a little too much tonight at times.”
The win puts New Bern at 7-1 on the season and Havelock falls to 1-5.
Ben Reno led the Bears with five goals and Nolan Gingrich added four.
Nathan Crowe had two goals to pace the Rams.
“Our guys are not used to losing, especially our football players,” Havelock coach Chris Crowe said.
“Nobody likes it, but we can’t point fingers at each other, we just have to point them at ourselves and get better.”
The Rams have been down a few of their starters due to injury for a few games and Crowe said he thinks his guys ran out of gas a bit at the end.
“They spent a lot of energy coming back and I think they got a little tired near the end,” he said.
“We have many guys still learning the game.”
New Bern travels to Jordan High School in Durham for a match Tuesday night and Havelock will next take on Croatan Tuesday at home.
