HAVELOCK | With another season of high school football ahead of him, Havelock junior offensive lineman Avery Jones has made his decision about where he will play his college football.

Jones decided late Tuesday night that North Carolina is the right fit for him and that he will play offensive line for the Tar Heels starting in the fall of 2018.

“I just had a really great relationship with the coaches and especially the O-line coach (Chris Kapilovic),” Jones said.

“I had kind of known for a while I wanted to go to North Carolina but I waited a little longer to know I was sure about it.”

Jones has started for the Rams on their offensive line each of the past two seasons.

He stands 6-foot-4 and weighs in at 260 pounds.

“Avery is just a great person in addition to a great player,” Havelock coach Caleb King said. “When your best players are also your hardest workers, that’s when you know they are special and Avery is.”

Jones was heavily recruited and began getting on the radars of colleges not long after he began playing varsity football.

He held scholarship offers from N.C. State, East Carolina, Vanderbilt, Duke, Maryland, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest in addition to the Tar Heel offer, according to 247sports.com.

What Jones gave UNC, a verbal commitment, is what it sounds like: It’s his word. He won’t officially sign until February of 2018, and other schools can still offer and recruit him.

“I like a lot about the program itself and where they are going,” Jones said of UNC. “The education is a big deal for me too, to be able to get an education from North Carolina is big for me.”

King added that Jones takes a lot of pride in his state.

“Staying in state was big for him. He wants to be able to do great things here in state,” King said.

“His size is good and that sets the floor for him, but his character and work ethic are what raises that bar.”

Jones and his Rams will begin getting ready for the 2017 season later this spring with spring practice.
