Havelock falls to Croatan, Wilmington Ashley

The Havelock High baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference contests to Croatan and Wilmington Ashley last week.

Havelock fell to Croatan 3-2, a late rally falling short.

The Cougars took a 3-0 lead through 3 1/2 innings. The Rams (1-5) came up with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and another in the bottom of the sixth but couldn’t manage to get the tying run in the seventh.

Rayce Harrelson went 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Rams at the plate. Alex Verduzco, Zach Sabdo, Tanner Murray, Grant Callaway and Junior Renwick had Havelock’s other hits.

Harrelson started the game on the mount, allowing two earned runs in 4 1/3 innings while striking out five. Verduzco finished, striking out three in 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Ian Ramirez was 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Cougars, while Matt Elardo collected two hits in three plate appearances.

Ramirez got the victory on the mound, striking out six in six innings. John Keel struck out two in a scoreless seventh to get the victory.

Against Wilmington Ashley, the Rams dropped a 3-1 decision. Havelock trailed 3-0 going into the seventh inning but made the contest interesting when Travis Kosner doubled home a run to narrow the margin to 3-1, but the Rams could get no closer.

Renwick had a couple of singles in the contest, while Verduzco, Sabdo, Sam Callaway and Dylan Miller also had hits in the game.

Sam Callaway, a freshman, pitched a complete game for Havelock, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out five.

Josh Steward led Ashley by going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Lee Fentress was also 2-for-3. Ben Foxall pitched a complete game for Ashley, allowing one earned run on seven hits while striking out five.

The Rams are scheduled to open Coastal 3A Conference play against Swansboro on Wednesday night. Havelock is scheduled to host Jacksonville on Friday before traveling to East Carteret on Monday and West Carteret on Tuesday.
