Rams to open season with county rivals West Craven, New Bern

Conference realignment will bring some new opponents to the Havelock High 2017 football schedule, including a rematch of the 2016 3A eastern regional championship game.

The Rams will have six non-conference opponents in the schedule released on Thursday. The new Coastal 3A Conference has just six teams, so the Rams will play five league games.

The season-opener is scheduled for Aug. 18 against former league foe West Craven, which has dropped to the 2A size classification. The contest is scheduled for Havelock High School.

The next week, the Rams play another Craven County rival on Aug. 25 at New Bern.

After that, the Rams are scheduled to tackle defending 1AA state champion Wallace-Rose Hill on Sept. 1 at Havelock High.

Another highlight of the non-conference schedule is a rematch against Rocky Mount on Sept. 15 at Havelock High. The Rams lost to Rocky Mount 34-33 in triple overtime in last season’s 3A eastern regional championship.

Havelock’s league opener is Oct. 6 at West Carteret, a week after the team’s only bye week on Sept. 29.

The Rams are scheduled to wrap up the regular season on Nov. 3 with a home game against Jacksonville.

All game times are scheduled for 7 p.m.

Havelock went 13-2 last season under former coach Jim Bob Bryant, who left to become head coach at Freedom High School in Morganton. The Rams hired former assistant and Havelock High graduate Caleb King as its new head football coach.
