The New Bern Bears and Havelock Rams played their customary early-season rivalry game on the baseball diamond Wednesday night at Boykin Field at New Bern High.
In this rendition, the Bears used timely hitting and took advantage of Havelock blunders to come away with a 5-1 win.
New Bern hung two runs on the board in the bottom of the first after the Rams got one in the top of the frame.
However, for Havelock, that run would be its last but New Bern would tack on three more.
"I felt like we had pretty good approaches at the plate tonight and that overall for this early in the season, hitting and pitching were good," New Bern coach Mike Ellsworth said.
"Both teams played well and I felt like we really made the plays we needed to with runners in scoring position."
Havelock got on the board against Bears' starting pitcher Jay Pike in the top of the first with back-to-back doubles by Zach Sabdo and Alex Verduzco.
New Bern scored off a Davis Balentine double in the bottom of the first, followed by a Brad Barlow single and then Balentine scored on a pass ball.
Barlow came home on a sacrifice-fly from Zach Long, making it 2-1.
Pike settled down a bit from there but the Rams had scoring chances they could not capitalize on.
Jr Renwick doubled with one out in the third but was stranded at third base after a ground out and a pop up.
Rayce Harrelson was thrown out at home while trying to score in the fourth inning and Verduzco got caught at second base making a wide turn in the sixth.
"We certainly made some mistakes that led to New Bern getting more runs," Havelock acting head coach Chase Holleman said.
"They (New Bern) have some great outfielders that made plays against us and I felt like we weren't as aggressive as we should have been at times."
Holleman was filling in for Rams' head coach Matt James who was away with personal matters.
Renwick pitched for the Rams and gave up four runs (two earned) over five innings and allowed five hits.
Havelock made four errors to the Bears' one.
"I like what we had with our offensive execution tonight and we have some depth we were able to take advantage of," Ellsworth said.
Michael Smith drove in two runs for the Bears and Daniel Rust added an RBI.
New Bern (1-0) will be back on the field Friday at Millbrook, while Havelock (1-1) hosts East Carteret Friday night.
