Cardinals end Rams' four-game winning streak

Havelock’s late-season surge toward a possible playoff spot slowed Tuesday night with a 66-59 loss to Jacksonville in a Coastal 3A Conference game in Jacksonville.

Nijear Singleton scored 22 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the Cardinals, who survived a fourth-quarter rally in the victory over Havelock.

The Rams (10-11, 6-5) had come into the contest on a four-game winning streak having beating White Oak 49-40 in overtime, Swansboro 79-36 and Richlands 83-53 in a five-day span.

However, Havelock couldn’t maintain the momentum against the Cardinals (11-11, 7-4), who moved into third place alone in the conference entering Thursday’s regular-season finale at White Oak.

David Pickett added 16 points and 8 rebounds while Jaicari Boone had 10 points for the Cardinals, who lost 69-68 at Havelock earlier this season.

This time, Jacksonville built a 45-26 third-quarter lead, but the Rams used a 30-11 run in the fourth to pull to within 63-56 with 2:20 left.

Havelock got as close as 64-59 with 10 seconds left, but Dillon Stedman made two free throws with 6.9 seconds left to seal the win.

“It wasn’t the prettiest, but in the end we will take it,” coach Doug Erny said. “A win is a win. I thought we played really aggressive in our match-up zone and then we got away from it for a little bit … and then we needed to reel them back in and we did.”

Khalil Barrett led Havelock with 23 points, while Quinzel Lockhart added 12.

Havelock closes the regular season today at West Craven.
