SWANSBORO | Senior Daniel Adams won West Craven’s first individual conference wrestling title since 2012, and then classmate Michael Woolley followed moments later.

The Eagles had six grapplers compete in the championship round as they had their best finish in years at Saturday’s Coastal 3-A Conference Championships at Swansboro High School.

“We could have done better in some areas but I’m pleased we had six guys in the finals and three in consolations,” said West Craven coach Bobby Griffin. “We had nine guys going for medals on a young team with only five seniors. That’s pretty good.”

West Craven finished fourth with 130 points, nine points behind third-place Havelock, which had five wrestling in the championship round.

Swansboro won the tournament with 181.5 points, followed by Jacksonville (144) and Swansboro (139).

Combined, West Craven and Havelock had five conference champions, six second-place finishers and two third-place wrestlers.

Adams (132 pounds) beat Jacksonville’s Nick Vasquez, 6-3, in the championship finals, while Woolley pinned Havelock’s Jashaun Boone.

“I think Daniel wrestled well against someone he beat before,” Griffin said. “He’s very aggressive offensively. He didn’t make too many mistakes in his finals match and he has a solid win.

“Woolley stuck to his game plan. He executed his moves well. He was worried a little bit about Boone’s quickness on his feet. He countered the shots well and got the pin.”

West Craven’s Tyler Bird (106), Christen Koonce (182), Jayson McDonald (182) and Joshua Crump (285) took second place, while Jonathan Ward (120) placed third.

Havelock’s heavyweight Destin Flloyd finished the tournament by pinning Crump for the conference championship. Lamonte Frazier (160) and Kendall Frazier (182) won their championship bout.

“Destin look like an animal and Kendall wrestled really well,” said Havelock coach Chase Holleman. “Lamonte wrestled really well and gutted it out.  For him to gut it out and still get the win, I’m proud of him.

“Me and Lamonte have quite a bit of history, so for him to win conference is pretty special to me.”

Havelock’s Krystian Kinsey (138) and Boone (170) finished second, while Jacob Price (220) took third.

“I thought, for the most part, we wrestled well. We lost quite few matches, that I felt in my opinion, we could have won,” Holleman said. “We are going back to the drawing to the drawing board on Monday to see what we can do to punch some tickets to the state tournament.”

West Craven and Havelock will find out on Monday if it made the dual team playoffs.

Regionals will be at West Brunswick High School on Feb. 10-11.

“We have to make sure we are wrestling our match and not somebody else’s,” Holleman said. “We can’t be lackadaisical when we step on the mat. We have to be ready for each match no matter what.”
