Rams defeat West Craven 71-33
Aniylah Bryant scored a game-high 27 points for Havelock Rams.
But for girls’ basketball coach Anna Spear, it was more about how Bryant put up those points.
The Rams dished out 18 assists and had 26 steals in their 71-33 victory over West Craven on the first day of the Craven County Holiday Classic at Havelock High School on Tuesday.
“It’s not just about Aniylah Bryant. It’s what is created for her. It’s a team effort,” Spear said. “We are balanced and we are sharing, but one of our goals is to get some depth.”
Bryant added five rebounds and seven steals, while Nyasia Blango distributed 11 assists and pulled down 10 rebounds. Lanavaeh Fisher poured in 17 points for Havelock to go along with her four steals.
The Rams’ relentless defensive pressure forced 29 West Craven turnovers, but were rebounded 30-27.
“We tried to change up a lot today, but we are still not doing it as a unit,” Spear said. “We have to get on the boards. We aren’t physical enough. We need someone really physical inside.”
Havelock (9-1) plays Pamlico at 5 p.m. on Wednesday in the championship game. West Craven (0-8) takes on New Bern at 1 p.m. in the consolation game.
Keltsy Hardee’s putback gave Havelock a 60-21 lead after three quarters. The Rams’ advantage reached 40 in the fourth quarter, igniting a running clock.
“We were ready to go today,” said Spear, whose team finished second in last week’s Brogden tournament in Wilmington. “We have to get ready to hit some boards because Pamlico is very good. We did some good things today.”
A 3-pointer by Nseya Harden at the end of the first quarter pushed Havelock’s lead to 25-6.
Bryant’s 19 first-half points assisted in the Rams’ 46-14 cushion at halftime.
Harden and Alanna Williams chipped in seven points apiece.
Harmony Campbell scored eight points to lead West Craven. Dottie Dixon added six points and eight rebounds.
