Rams beat Pamlico 71-43
With former Havelock basketball star Ky Bowman in the stands, current Ram Quinzel Lockhart and Miels Sutton did their best imitation.
Lockhart flushed down a two-handed jam to start Havelock’s late run and Sutton threw one down at the end as the Rams dominated the second half en route to a 71-43 victory over Pamlico Tuesday on the first day of the Craven County Holiday Classic at Havelock High School.
Lockhart scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Sutton contributed 10 points and nine boards.
“The defense picked up. They quit letting them have open shots,” Havelock coach Daniel Griffee said. “We were able to get transition points off our defense.”
Havelock will play West Craven at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the championship game.
Jeffrey Harris led Havelock with 29 points, with five 3-pointers.
“Jeffrey picked it up and that’s what I expect from him. He’s done it before and that’s expected out of him,” Griffee said.
Leading just 43-41, Havelock scored the final four points of the third quarter and opened the fourth on an 18-1 burst. The Rams outscored Pamlico 23-2 in the final quarter.
“It’s the same old, same old for us,” said Pamlico coach Earl Sadler. “We have a system and when we run our system, we dictate the pace and everybody is involved and plays defense.
“For 32 minutes, probably six of those minutes we played Pamlico basketball.”
Cedric Coffey kept Pamlico in the game through three quarters as he posted 18 points with four 3-pointers.
Harris’ 11 points sparked Havelock’s 21-11 lead. Pamlico closed to within 27-26 after Sincere Gibbs drained a trey.
The Rams scored the next four points to take a 31-26 lead at halftime.
Havelock (2-7) outrebounded Pamlico (4-4) 46-29 and forced 19 turnovers.
Khalil Barrett snagged 10 rebounds and Anthony Harris grabbed five.
“We just didn’t run rebounds down. It was rebounding and turnovers. We have to cut turnovers down and we have to rebound,” Sadler said.
Pamlico plays New Bern at 3 p.m. in the consolation game.
