The Havelock Rams used their defensive pressure which led to fastbreak buckets and a 71-48 win over rival New Bern in a non-conference girls’ basketball game Tuesday at New Bern High.

The Rams swiped 15 steals and forced 27 turnovers, while outscoring New Bern, 39-22, in the second half.

“I was pleased with the second half, but not pleased with the first half,” said Havelock coach Anna Spear. “We had no composure in that first half. In the second half, we broke the press, made better decisions with our shot selection and we shared the ball.”

Havelock (4-0) led by three at the end of the first quarter and by six at halftime.

A 3-pointer by E.J. Henderson moved New Bern to within 27-26 with 1:25 to go in the second quarter.

The Rams opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run and closed it on a 10-2 run.

NyAsia Blango scored 27 points to lead Havelock, while Aniylah Bryant scored 20. Nseya Harden contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals.

“We are sharing the ball. We are looking at our assist ratio,” Spear said. “I’m looking for composure and decision making this early in the season.”

New Bern (2-3) dominated the rebounding edge, 37-17, led by Star Bell-Freeman’s 16 boards. Freeman also added a team-high 13 points.

“We wanted to rebound because they (Havelock) are a great transition team,” New Bern coach Joe Davis said. “Once they get into transition, they score a lot of points. We wanted to slow that down by rebounding.”

New Bern’s defense forced 15 turnovers.

Henderson scored 11 for the Bears ad Diondria Courman scored 10.

“I told them today, Havelock is a pretty good team. We need to take the positives from this and transition it to the conference play,” Davis said.
