Sophomore scores three TDS as Rams win 56-13
Havelock’s Cameron Hutchinson fumbled the football in the first quarter against Richlands, but he knew just what he had to do.
“I felt like I had to make up for it,” he said.
Boy did he. The sophomore running back replacing senior Tony Sharpe scored three touchdowns as Havelock dominated the Wildcats 56-13 Friday night in Richlands.
Sharpe moved out of the Havelock High school district and has gone to East Carteret High School, taking 72 career touchdowns and more than 4,400 yards with him. Hutchinson has been backing up Sharpe the entire season.
“It’s next man up,” he said.
After Corey Cooper gave the Rams a 7-0 lead with a 6-yard touchdown run, the Rams appeared headed for the end zone again, but Hutchinson fumbled at the Richlands 26-yard line. Havelock’s defense forced a punt, and Hutchinson was able to score from 13 yards out for a Havelock 14-0 lead with 2:48 left in the first quarter.
Hutchinson added a 7-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and a 3-yarder at the beginning of the third as the Rams pulled out to a 42-7 lead.
“I think I did really well, but I put the ball on the ground once, and you can’t do that around here,” Hutchinson said. “I feel like I could have done better, but I think I did well and helped the team out.”
The victory moves Havelock to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the Coastal 3A Conference, with the Rams scheduled to finish the second half of their game against West Craven at 7 p.m. Monday at Havelock High. The game will likely determine the conference championship and a top seed for the playoffs. West Craven had a 7-0 lead at halftime when lightning forced the game to be suspended on Oct. 6. Friday’s game against Richlands – delayed about 30 minutes because of lightning – was the first time Havelock had taken the field since.
But there was little rust against the Wildcats (1-8, 1-3), though Shayvon Kornegay’s 45-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter got them within 14-7.
Cooper followed with a 10-yard scoring pass to Montrece Gatling, and Dominick Madden’s fumble recovery set up Hutchinson’s 7-yard touchdown a minute later. Quinzel Lockhart made three Richlands defenders miss on a 30-yard touchdown reception that gave the Rams a 35-7 lead at halftime.
Justin Hoover’s 66-yard touchdown run, and Timothy Horton’s 16-yard fumble return for a touchdown accounted for Havelock’s final points.
Richlands got 5-yard touchdown run from Amonti Drummond.
