Rams get four rushing touchdowns in 28-0 victory

The Havelock Rams used four rushing touchdowns to carry their way to a 28-0 victory over Northside Friday in Jacksonville.

Havelock, ranked No. 1 in the state in the 3A Associated Press poll, did not shy away from that ranking.

Cameron Hutchinson scored on runs of five and nine yards in the first quarter, and the Rams maintained that 14-0 lead through halftime.

While Northside’s offense failed to score, its defense kept the Monarchs in the game.

Havelock quarterback Corey Cooper was sacked seven times, and the Rams had four turnovers.

“I thought the defense played great against one of the best scoring offenses in the state,” said Northside coach Kendrick Pollock. “(Havelock) is used to coming in scoring at least 40 points and I am proud we held them under that.”

Next season, Northside plays in the Coastal 3A Conference alongside Havelock.

“We know that we can play and compete with them because we have already beaten three teams in that conference and we are looking forward to being there with them next year,” Pollock said.

Havelock senior Montrece Gatling returned the opening kickoff of the second half 80 yards for a touchdown, extending the Rams’ cushion to 20-0.

Senior running back Tony Sharpe added a 10-yard run early in the fourth quarter to put the finishing touches on the win.

Havelock head football coach Jim Bob Bryant declined to comment. Instead, he deferred post-game questions to assistant coach Matt Handley.

“Our offense made some mistakes, but with practice we can fix that to prepare for our upcoming games,” Handley said.

Havelock’s defense ruled the game. Christian Capps recovered two fumbles, Tyiyon Johnson recovered a fumble, and Solomon Beligotti intercepted a pass.

Havelock (5-0) begins conference play at West Carteret next Friday.
