Havelock High football coach Jim Bob Bryant announced his resignation last week
Havelock High football coach Jim Bob Bryant announced his resignation last week to become the new football coach at Freedom High School in Morganton.
We’re not surprised. Bryant has been a hot commodity in coaching for some time now, especially after leading the Rams to three consecutive state championships from 2011 to 2013.
And just for good measure, he helped the Rams get back to the state championship game in 2014, but as the saying goes, you can’t win them all, as the Rams fell to Crest.
During those four years, the Rams were 61-3. And, it wasn’t as if Havelock suddenly slipped the past couple of years. The Rams reached the eastern regional championship game this season. For seven of the last eight seasons, Bryant’s Havelock teams finished among the four best 3A teams in the state. That’s not too shabby.
Of course, anyone in that position will have detractors. They can be heard sometimes on Friday nights in the stands. And some may have not liked his personality. After all, some could see Bryant as brash. Some said he would run up scores. We know opponents didn’t like him.
But what Bryant did for Havelock was win. The city is known in parts of the state because of those three state championships
All that’s left is to thank Bryant for his efforts to help shape young lives while a teacher and coach at Havelock High and to wish him success in the future. And who knows? Maybe we’ll see him again — at a Havelock-Freedom state championship game.
