Thomas E. “Ed” Woody, 88, of New Bern, died on Thursday, March 21, 2013.

He was a native of Coeburn, Va., and was a minor-league baseball pitcher before joining the Marine Corps during World War II. He was stationed at Cherry Point and retired from civil service as a metalsmith inspector. He was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school and was an usher. He enjoyed golf.

Funeral will be 11a.m., Wednesday at the Pollock-Best Funeral Home Chapel, New Bern, with the Rev. Carol Grantham officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow at New Bern Memorial Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Bonnie Minton Woody; one daughter, Patricia W. Bissette of Wilson; three sons, Mike Woody of New Bern, Kenneth Woody of Ferrum, Va., and Jeff Woody of Diamondhead, Miss.; one sister, Myrtle W. Adkins of Cleveland; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
