Samuel Marcus Gurganus Jr., 92, of New Bern, died on Wednesday, June 25, 2014.

He grew up in New Bern and graduated from New Bern High School. He served in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Daniels and the USS Quick. After his discharge from the Navy, he graduated from the apprentice school at Cherry Point and retired from the Naval Air Rework Facility of Cherry Point after 31 1/2 years of service. He was a member of Ruth’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and telling stories.

Funeral was Saturday at Cotten Funeral Home, New Bern.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gail Sadler Gurganus; two daughters, Ann Robinson and Ellen Gurganus; one brother, Ben Gurganus; and three grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
