Melvin David Wetzel, Havelock’s oldest veteran, died Saturday at the age of 94. It was during a recent Veteran’s Day Parade, that “Mel” was named Havelock’s oldest veteran.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree Msgr. Frank J. Howard Council #6648 and 4th Degree of Battista Council Assembly #2894. He was also a member of the Havelock Senior Citizens, American Legion of New Bern, a member of NARFE and a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels organization.

Melvin served in the Army Air Corps as well as working for 33 more years with the federal government at NARF.

Mel never met a stranger. He could be found calling bingo at the Annunciation Church and Senior Citizens, driving a school bus for the local school students, or selling pumpkins and Christmas trees from his front yard. He also loved spending time enjoying a good game of  baseball.
