Leon Calvin Staton Sr., 78, of 710 Temples Point Road, Havelock, died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Cherry Point Bay Rehabilitation Center.

He was a native of Norfolk, Va., and retired as a master sergeant from the Marine Corps, earning the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and Navy Unit and Meritorious Unit Commendations. He was later employed by Carolina Power and Light, and Oscar’s Mortuary. He served as a member of the Harlowe Community Association, and was also a Craven County Commissioner and member of the Craven County Board of Education, Ten-Twenty Associates and Montford Point Marine Association.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Havelock High School Performing Arts Center, 101 Webb Blvd., with the Revs. Robert Little, Jr. and Avery C. Brown officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow at the Piney Grove AMEZ Church Cemetery.

He is survived by one son, Leon C. Staton Jr. of Laurel, Md.; two daughters, Dorothy L. Staton of Greensboro and Latisha D. Staton-Foster of Havelock; two brothers, James L. Staton of Virginia Beach, Va., and Joseph A. Staton Sr. of Chesapeake, Va., one sister, Lillie B. Burrows of Stoney Creek, Va.; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Viewing will be noon to 6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Oscar’s Mortuary, 1700 Oscar Drive, New Bern.
