George T. Norris, CMSgt, U.S. Air Force, Retired, 86, of Havelock, died Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at CarolinaEast Medical Center, New Bern.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 10, 2013, at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kelli Sorg, officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery, with military honors.

Mr. Norris was born on November 10, 1926, in Havelock, to John Corbitt Norris and Thelma Armstrong Norris. He married his wife, Ruth, on April 3, 1948, in Honolulu, HI. Mr. Norris served during World War II and the Korean Conflict, where he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After 22 years of service in the Air Force, he retired as Chief Master Sergeant. Mr. Norris was a member of Cherry Point Masonic Lodge #688 A.F. & A.M. and was also a Shriner. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Norris; daughter, Denise Rountree and husband, Danny, of Hahira, Ga.; son, George T. Norris Jr. and wife, Laura, of Havelock; brother, Monzelle “Sparky” Norris and wife, Linda, of New Bern; grandchildren, Corbitt Norris and wife, Danielle, Nevin Norris, Zac Rountree and wife, Marla, and Eli Rountree; and great-grandchild, Suzanna Ruth Rountree.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

In addition to his parents, his sisters, Iris McGee, Marie Wallace, and Betty Lou Nethercutt; and brothers, John “Jimmy” Norris and Bobby Hardy, preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners’ Hospitals for Children, c/o Sudan Shriners, 403 E. Front Street, New Bern, NC  28560 or to Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 3070 Adams Creek Road, Havelock, NC  28532.
