George Cochran Smith, 55, of New Bern, died on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014.
Born in New York, he graduated from New Bern High School in 1977. He was a Navy veteran and salesman for N.C. Natural Gas. He retired from a civil service position repairing Pedro rescue helicopters at Cherry Point. He also worked as a substitute teacher and volunteered with the guardian ad litem program. He enjoyed fishing.
Memorial service will be 6 p.m. Thursday at Pollock-Best Funeral Home Chapel, New Bern.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Smith of the home; two daughters, Kristyn Michelle Smith of New Bern and Elizabeth Nicole Smith of Maysville; two stepchildren, Kimberly Bessey of Winterville and Corey Friedman of Rockingham; his stepmother, Margie Cochran of Deltona, Fla.; two brothers, Joseph Smith of Bradenton, Fla., and William Smith of Wake Forest; two sisters, Robin Smith Ball of New Bern and Marianna Smith Morin of Wake Forest; two stepbrothers, Tracy Cochran and Kenneth Cochran of Deltona, Fla.; and one granddaughter.
The family will receive friends following the service.
