Mary Helen Ward McCaffrey, age 86, passed away peacefully on December 23rd, in Rocky Mount, NC, surrounded by her loving family.

Mary Helen Ward McCaffrey, age 86, passed away peacefully on December 23rd, in Rocky Mount, NC, surrounded by her loving family.

Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years, Joseph (Joe) McCaffrey, her son Michael, her parents William and Helen Ward, and her brothers Hugh and John.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law: Patty and Jeff Dorroh of Burns, OR and Terry and Steve Moore of Rocky Mount, NC; her four grandchildren and a son-in-law: Jennifer Moore Christensen and husband Rob Christensen, Matthew Moore, Mary Dorroh and Madeline Dorroh. She is also survived by her brother William Ward; sisters-in-law Marie Louise Ward, Ann Ward, and Joleen Hammel; brothers-in-law Philip Roy and Lennie Hammel, and many dear cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Mary was born June 10, 1931 in Canton, MA, the second of four children. She knew she wanted to become a nurse at the age of five, and received her RN training through the Massachusetts General Hospital program in Boston, MA. Upon graduation, Mary joined the U.S. Navy and served at Camp Lejeune, NC, where she met her husband Joe, a U.S. Marine. Later, Mary earned her BSN from East Carolina University. Throughout the years of raising children Mike, Patty and Terry, Mary and Joe moved numerous times and experienced both wartime and peacetime military separations. Their love and faith was strong, and they somehow made it look easy.

A wonderful wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend, Mary embraced her faith and her life. She was a compassionate, skilled nurse who worked primarily in home health and hospice roles. She was a devoted volunteer, member of the Catholic Daughters, and member of the St. Paul Catholic Church, in New Bern, NC. Mary’s faith was evident in her kind, nurturing, and loving presence.

A wake was held at 5:00-6:00 pm on Sunday, Jan 7th followed by the rosary at 6:00 pm at Pollock-Best Funeral Home in New Bern, NC. A Funeral Mass was held at 1:00 pm on Monday, Jan 8th at St. Paul Catholic Church in New Bern. Burial, with US Navy Honors, followed in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
