Derryl Garner, 85, of Newport, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport.

Derryl Garner, 85, of Newport, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport.

He retired after 42 years of government service from Cherry Point as a systems safety manager. He served as Newport’s mayor for 36 years and was involved with Rotary, Neuse River Council of Government, N.C. League of Municipalities, State Ports Committee, Newport Masonic Lodge and Allies for Cherry Points’s Tomorrow. He was a member of Newport Baptist Church.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Newport Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Carroll and Rev. Jack Bowen officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Newport.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jane Mitchell Garner of the home; one daughter, Julie Hathaway of Hope Mills; one son, M. Kyle Garner of Beaufort; half-sister, Geneva Ward of Newport; and half-brother, Donnie Ward of Beaufort.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Newport Baptist Church.
