Driver charged after Saturday morning wreck

Havelock News

A Wilmington man attempting to pass another vehicle on East Main Street ricocheted off a concrete center median and wrecked Saturday morning.

Michael Powell Mies, 34, was transported to the hospital after the crash, according to Havelock Chief of Police G. Wayne Cyrus. He faces several charges, including possession of an open container of alcohol, failure to wear a seatbelt and speeding.

The wreck happened at 10:21 a.m. near the intersection of East Main Street and Webb Boulevard in front of the McDonald’s. Mies was driving west when he lost control of his 2002 Ford SUV, hit the concrete median, bounced across the two westbound lanes and went into a ditch, striking a culvert pipe and utility pole, Cyrus said.

“There was never any contact with a second vehicle,” Cyrus said.

The concrete median Mies hit is part of the left turn lane from East Main Street to Webb Boulevard and is not part of the East Main Street median construction project.

Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $7,000, according to the report on the crash.
