About 185 Marines and sailors from Cherry Point and New River deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan on Friday.

About 160 were members of Marine Light-Attack Helicopter Squadron 467 while another 25 were from Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 29, according to a release from the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.

The deployment is expected to be the last deployment of an HMLA squadron to Afghanistan.

HMLA-467 activated in 2008 at Cherry Point. While about half of the squadron is deployed, the other half is scheduled to relocate to New River by the end of the month, according to the release. When the rest of the squadron returns from deployment, which is expected to be later this year, they will rejoin the other members at New River.

The squadron had been temporarily based at Cherry Point as hangar facilities were constructed and renovated at New River, according to the release.

A second helicopter squadron, Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 366, currently based at Cherry Point is expected to follow HMLA 467 in relocating to New River in 2015.

The moves will mean that every squadron in Marine Aircraft Group 26 and Marine Aircraft Group 29 will be based together at New River. The moves are intended to streamline supply and operations for the units and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, according to the release.
