Cherry Point has announced that the Black Diamond Jet Team will headline its air show May 16 to 18.

The air show theme contest is under way as events surrounding the 2014 show begin to take shape.

The Black Diamonds feature five L-39 jets and one CT-33 jet sporting Arctic camouflage paint schemes. They are civilian-owned and flown by a mixture of military, former military and civilian pilots.

The team is based out of Lakeland, Fla. and features formation flying in combination with loops, barrel rolls and other maneuvers.

The jet team will be making its first appearance at the Cherry Point Air Show.

Also part of the air show lineup will be the Aeroshell team, featuring four AT-6 Texans. The Texans are propeller planes with radial engines that first appeared in 1938. They were originally made as basic trainers for pilots entering the U.S. Army Air Corps and were flown by nearly all of the new pilots headed off to World War II.

Solo pilot Bill Leff will also be returning to Cherry Point with his silver T-6 Texan. The vintage war bird is popular for its firework spewing night show leaving streaks in the sky above the flight line, according to information provided by the air show.
