A suspect in a 2013 shooting in Havelock was captured Tuesday night in Wilmington.
Javon Anthony Ward, 23, of Havelock and Newport, had a warrant out for his arrest on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill. The charge stems from an Aug. 9 shooting in the parking lot of Kelly Park apartments in Havelock. The victim, Stevn Kyle Todd, was struck five times, received treatment at the hospital and was later released.
Havelock Police Chief G. Wayne Cyrus said that Ward was arrested Tuesday night in a Wilmington hotel room with a substantial amount of heroin in his possession. He did not have the exact details of the arrest. Messages left with Wilmington police were not returned by press time.
As a result of the Wilmington arrest, Ward is charged with two counts of felony trafficking in opium or heroin, felony possession with intent to manufacture, sell or distribute heroin, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Other charges include resist/delay/obstruct public officers and two counts of failure to appear on a misdemeanor.
Ward’s total bond is $256,000.
