Some snow may be possible, but forecast remains uncertain

Craven County may get a small accumulation of snow Saturday night into Sunday morning, according to forecasters.

Meteorologists are expecting a cold front moving into the area Saturday to collide with a strong low pressure system coming off the coast later in the night.

Tom Lonka, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Newport, said those two systems could create snow.

“It looks like the two ingredients coming together will produce some snow on the back side of the system,” Lonka said. “We are not expecting a snow storm but we are expecting some accumulation. The current thinking (Friday afternoon) is for a half inch for Craven County and the New Bern area.”

But any accumulation is hard to predict until about six hours before the snow falls, Lonka said.

“The forecast could change,” he said. “It could be more or less accumulation.”

It was difficult to forecast where the bands of snow might go or where the heaviest snowfall would be, Tonka said.
