A Carteret County man accused of abducting a 12-year-old girl has been returned to Carteret County, authorities said Saturday.

Timothy Newman, 38, a registered sex offender who lives in the Bogue community of Carteret County, was located Sept. 26 in Florida with Abigaile Lefevers, also of Carteret County, who had been missing from her home for two days.

He is accused of child abduction and was in custody at the Broward County (Fla.) Jail. Carteret officials said Saturday night that Newman was in custody at the Carteret County Jail.

Charges for Newman include child abduction, grand theft auto and probation violation. Carteret County authorities filed the child abduction charge, and court records in Broward County indicate that the grant theft auto charge was filed by Hallandale Police Department in Florida, which is the law enforcement agency that located Newman.

An investigation into Abigaile’s disappearance began Sept. 24 after her father reported her missing.

Robert Lefevers said he spent the day with Abigaile Sept. 23 and last saw her at about 10 p.m. When he awoke the next morning she was gone. She was returned home Oct. 2.

Newman, who lives in the same community, was also gone and did not report to work that day.
