The Havelock Police Department is offering area business owners safety tips during the holiday shopping season.
The goal is to keep business owners safe while helping police with crucial information that may make catching a criminal more likely, according to a release.
Police advise that the first call after a robbery should be to 9-1-1. According to the release, many businesses have policies that require managers or owners be called, but police say a call to 9-1-1 as soon as possible gives police a better chance to capture a suspect.
Police ask that victims try to remember specific details about the suspect as well as any potential getaway vehicle, such as color, make and model, if possible a license plate number and direction of travel. However, police advise against following a suspect.
Police also advise that store personnel not resist, put up a fight or try to detain a suspect. While often videos highlighting successful efforts to thwart criminals are shown on TV, such actions could lead to physical injury and potentially a loss of life.
Owners and workers should also be aware of suspicious activity in and around the business.
Police will provide bank escorts and escorts for employees to their vehicles if staffing allows.
