A volunteer firefighter has been suspended from the Newport Fire Department after authorities say he constructed a homemade device that exploded.
According to information from the Newport Police Department, Town Manager Dick Casey asked they investigate an incident at the fire department from June 21 to 23 that was reported as an explosive device being set off at the station.
Authorities say a volunteer firefighter with the department constructed a device with household items that resulted in an overpressure rupture of the vessel it was constructed in. The device was not incendiary in nature and it was made of common household items and chemicals.
No injuries or damage resulted in the incident.
The Newport Police Department conferred with the Carteret District Attorney’s Office and then declined to prosecute.
The Interim Fire Chief Kane Johnson and Interim Town Manager Tim White have suspended the volunteer firefighter from the department.
