Newport town manager to retire, fire chief fired

Dick Casey, the Newport town manager, said he is retiring after six years of service with the town effective July 1.

The retired Air Force brigadier general put his experience to work on the civilian side with municipal government work and has been with the town since April 2007.

Now, he said, is a good time for fresh leadership for the town and staff.

"It’s time for a change in perspective," he said.

But Casey said there are still projects he wants to see through, and he wants to get the town through the budget process before he departs. Budgets for the 2013-14 fiscal year must be adopted by the end of June.

"What I told the council in my notice is that I want to see the budget through. That’s one reason. The other reason (for the July 1 departure) is that I want to give some time for transition," he said.

Of the projects before the town, Casey said he wants to see the bid awarded for the expansion of the town’s sewer treatment plant.
