A Newport man was convicted of armed robbery this week in Carteret County Superior Court.

Gregory Duane Anderson, 47, pleaded guilty to a charge of robbery with a dangerous weapon and was sentenced to a prison term of 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 years, according to District Attorney Scott Thomas.

On Sept. 20, 2011, Anderson pushed his mother down a flight of stairs when she refused to give him her prescription medication. He took the medication and her pistol and headed for Jones County.

During a stop at Pap’s Grill in Stella, Anderson stole a 40-ounce beer and a glass tube. When the store clerk attempted to stop him, he pulled the pistol on her and fled in his car.

He crossed into Jones County and was pursued by authorities at a high rate of speed and ended up crashing his car into a sheriff’s car on Catfish Lake Road.

According to the district attorney’s office, Anderson was convicted in Jones County of felony fleeing to elude arrest and possession of a stolen firearm. He was sentenced to prison terms of 8 to 10 months and 14 to 17 months on those offenses.

After serving those sentences, he was brought to Carteret County Superior Court on the armed robbery count. His mother refused to prosecute him for the assault.
